Ok, so I’m not sure Hi Fi is quite the word for a Sharp VZ-3510, it’s an all in one unit with an upright turntable, very cutting edge back in the eighties, but perhaps a bit gimmicky!
This one had been purchased from eBay and the radio worked, the cassette deck worked and the turntable door would open and close but it would not play the record. This took me back to a day where I had just finished my apprenticeship and as I worked for a Sharp dealer back then I was reasonably familiar with it.
The tone arm on these is moved across the record on a guide wire, very much like the dial drive on old radios, this wire was in turn moved by a small motor and worm gear assembly attached to the back of the turntable. All that was wrong was that the drive belt between the motor and pulley was so old it had decomposed, for want of a better word. A clean up of the motor and worm gear pulleys and a new belt had it up and running again.
Quite satisfying to get something so old working again and a refreshing change from all the modern stuff from Argos with tinny sound and dodgy software.
